As Muslims we are guided by our faith to be good stewards of the environment. Allah says in the Quran “Then We appointed you viceroys in the earth after them, that We might see how ye behave” [Quran 10:14]. It is this spirit that guides us to be agents of change and do our part to take care of the environment.

To reduce our carbon foot print, over ten years ago we were the FIRST ISLAMIC ORGANIZATION to have installed a full solar array. This array covers most of the roof of the ISBCC, and is clearly visible from Google Maps Satellite View. Todate it has generated between 95,000 and 105,000 Kilowatt Hours each year.

According to the US EPA, one kWh of electricity produces 1.106 pounds of carbon based upon a typical mix of generation sources.

100,000 kWh per year x 1.106 lb of CO2 per kWh = 110,600 lb of CO2 emissions avoided per year.

A tree can typically offset 193 lb of CO2 per year. So this array is the equivalent of 573 trees each year. We also have some real trees too!

This is all in addition to the cost savings.
