Our
Staff & Boards

The Islamic Society of Boston’s governance and management structure has evolved over the past forty years. After the construction of the ISB Cultural Center, ISB engaged with MAS-Boston to provide programming and services to ISB masajid. This five year agreement was renewed once. Since 2019, ISB has moved to a more traditional and direct model to provide the core spiritual, social, educational and cultural services associated with a North American masjid.

GOVERNANCE BOARDS

Under the currently bylaws adopted in 2019 in order to increase both diversity and representation, ISB has been governed and managed through a three tier structure consisting of 1) a Board of Trustees, 2) a Board of Directors and 3) a small core team of employees working alongside volunteer-driven Committees for key functions such as Facilities, IT, Programs and School.

This structure is consistent with that of many larger non-profits including major universities. The Board of Trustees is responsible for the building, property and endowment trust, as well as for appointing a Board of Directors (BOD). The Board of Directors then is responsible for overseeing the programs and operations of the organization, as managed by our team at the masajid in Cambridge and Roxbury.

In our current governance structure, all Directors are local volunteers appointed to serve four year terms. Since this new structure has been in place.  We strive for diversity in our leadership, with women and younger community members in the top leadership positions. We are the first and largest Islamic organization in the New England area to have been led by women.

All Trustees, members of the Board of Directors and most committee members are volunteers. They serve out of love for their community, and receive no compensation from the organization.
