The Young Professionals group is designed to meet and connect with local muslims through social activities, halaqas, communities services and other relevant programming. The group addresses anyone post-undergrad and/or 22+. The group initially started in February 2009 with evening Islamic discussion circles. The focus on young professional was crucial for young Muslim college graduates who wanted more relevant programming for their specific age group. The evening discussion circles was a hit alhamdulillah drawing crowds from the entire community with consistent evening discussions led by Mohamed AbuTaleb, a graduate student at MIT at the time.
After the discussion circles ended, the Muslim Young Professionals began having lecture-formatted sessions including discussions every Friday at the Common Word Cafe. Visiting speakers as well as community members spoke on an array of topics related to Islam, Muslims and Islamic sciences. At this point, a stronger focus on social programming was also initiated to balance the educational programming.
Currently, the MAS-ISBCC Young Professionals is seeking active volunteers to further strengthen our programming work. Recently, we’ve had several successful outdoor excursions and we’d like to sustain this work moving forward. For instance, in May, we went on a hiking trip to Mount Cardigan in NH where we had spiritual reflections at the summit about the importance of maintaining good company in our lives. In June, we organized a very successful kayaking trip on Charles River. Recently, the committee worked with local leaders to hold a Tafseer series throughout Ramadan.
In addition to the social outings, we’ve also helped out with the monthly ISMO Food Drive and Soup Kitchen.
