Chief Executive Officer

The Islamic Society of Boston (ISB) is a thirty-year old institution in Greater Boston that currently operates two mosques: ISB-Cambridge and the ISB Cultural Center as well as multiple waqf (endowment) initiatives. As it moves towards growth and sustainability, the ISB has started to streamline the operations in the two mosques and is looking to significantly expand its waqf initiatives to enhance its programs and support its operations and broader Islamic causes.
As part of this ambitious journey, the ISB is seeking a Chief Executive Officer with a strong service-oriented mindset, experience in building efficient systems, and ability to manage strategic relationships. Reporting directly to the Board of Directors, the CEO will have primary responsibility to inspire the community to strive to live Prophetically, set strategic direction, integrate and streamline operations, and establish policies and partnerships to expand the resources available for the two mosques and their associated programs and services. The CEO will have full responsibility to execute the approved plans and strategies. This position will also oversee the growth of the waqf / endowment projects and pursue relevant investment opportunities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Initiate a community-based process to refine the current mission and vision of the ISB to better position it as a leading Islamic institution in the USA
  • Develop a strategic multi-year plan for the ISB, focusing on developing and maximizing the use of existing facilities to support the ISB’s aims as a religious and educational institution
  • Integrate and streamline operations across the various ISB locations as applicable
  • Set policies and procedures to streamline the operation and improve the culture at the ISB
  • Work in collaboration with board members, volunteer committees, and staff
  • Drive best practices at all levels of the institution
  • Oversee current Waqf investments and engage the right experts to grow the investment portfolio
  • Develop and strengthen key institutional relationships with key donors and partner organizations
  • Oversee a team of 4-5 senior staff members, and hire staff to augment the existing senior team

Qualifications & Skills

  • MBA or Master’s Level degree in a related field plus leadership and management experience
  • 10+ years of professional experience with increasing levels of responsibility
  • Excellent relationship skills and ability to navigate complex organizational dynamics
  • Experience in building/streamlining systems, processes and operations
  • Strong quantitative and analytical skills
  • Ability to build and understand financial statements
  • Proven track record of working with multiple stakeholders in a community-based setting
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Experience with Waqf, endowments, or general investments is a plus
