Job Description

Title: Executive Director

Function: Management

Reports to: Board of Directors

Leadership responsibilities: All Functions

Position Summary:

The Executive Director (ED) will be working full time, and be responsible for all aspects of operating the Islamic Society of Boston, a non-profit religious institution that runs the largest Islamic Center in New England. Taking a project management approach, the ED will play a key role in overseeing the programming, marketing, and fundraising as well as leading the implementation of the strategic plan. In collaboration with the Board, the ED will bring leadership, creativity and energy to further develop the organization’s vision, achieving its goals and enhancing the impact of its program and mission. ED will maintain a balanced culture which combines the innovation, richness and relevance of programs for the diverse community ISB serves, with the efficacy of best business practices, fiscal accountability, and institutional impact.

The EED will be a mission-focused, strategic, engaging and process-oriented leader with experience scaling an organization, leading management teams, and developing a performance culture among a group of diverse, talented individuals.

Key Accountabilities:

Management
  • Develop and execute annual plans within the approved annual budget In partnership with the Board of Directors(BOD)
  • Identify opportunities for process improvement and effective ways to achieve the plans
  • Establish a collaborative and transparent decision making process with the BOD
  • Serve as organizational leader, a coach and mentor for the staff and lead the performance management process that evaluates progress according to the goals
  • Oversee the programs and services for the community and ensure their quality and effectiveness
  • Produce and implement a reporting metric throughout the organization reflecting jointly agreed KPIs (Key performance indicator)
  • Manage partners relationships with the center
  • Continually evaluate and improve information technology and financial systems that support the growth organization
  • Foster an Islamic culture of leadership, embodying the values of the ISB (Islamic Society of Boston
  • Manage and direct all maintenance, environment and landscaping activities
  • Organizes update and controls data, documentation, records, and date necessary to ensure proper management

Development and Fundraising
  • Create and lead the systems, strategy and processes in collaboration with the BOD and BOT (board of trustees) to ensure ISB has the financial foundation to pursue its mission in the community
  • Ensure and solicit a robust prospects pool, engage staff in the process in a proactive manner and ensure that prospects are moving further in the engagement model
  • Crafting a comprehensive fundraising and development strategy by understanding the donors and community
Community Engagement
  • Serve as a visible and accessible leader of the organization, engaging with community members to understand their needs
  • Develop and manage an effective and engaging volunteer program
  • Lead community relationships and collaborations with other Islamic organizations, interfaith groups, and civic organizations
Education, Knowledge, Skills and Experience
  • Bachelor’s Degree required, advanced degree (MBA) preferred
  • Exposure, understanding, and/or experience in non-profit sector
  • Solid understanding of development, marketing, finance, technology, systems, and administration
  • Ability to handle and successfully deliver multiple projects
  • A minimum 6-8 years of relevant experience including at least 2 years of management experience
  • Ability to drive the strategic vision, mission and initiatives while aligning the organization and community
  • Ability to think strategically and understand needs of the community
  • Experience in managing multi-site organization
  • Proven track record of exceeding goals and meeting budgets
  • Resourceful, flexible and innovative; able to creatively deliver results with urgency in a resource-constrained environment
  • Ability to work independently as well as team builder who is able to connect to a diverse group both on an individual level and in large groups (including staff members)
  • Ability to empower the team, encouraging open discussions about ideas and approaches
  • Experience in embracing change, challenges, and opportunities with a positive approach
  • Must be available for weekend events and activities as required
