In Islam, religion is the base for Islamic culture; culture overall is not the base for religion.  Islam is a universal religion that is part of the Abrahamic tradition, in belief in one creator for all mankind.  That being said the essence of understanding Islam is through learning and understanding the Qur’an as well as the teachings of prophet Mohamed (may peace and blessings be upon him).

Culture is defined by some as betterment and is expressed by the Arts of all forms to help better educate to be more knowledgeable and beneficial.  This includes but is not limited to, Visual Arts, Poetry, Writing, History, Fashion, Cuisine, Architecture, Inventions, Science and Language.

For Islamic Culture, part of understanding these crucial elements is by knowing and understanding the language of the Qur’an in its authentic Arabic. As well as application of tadabur and tafakur that is commanded by Allah, meaning reflecting on Allah’s (God’s) revelation as well as his creation to understand and appreciate him better.  This is observation, reflection, exploration and application, and this is what defines as the Sciences and Arts in all forms. This also helps better understand Allah’s commandments and how they are beneficial for humanity.  Seeking knowledge is a continuous journey for every Muslim.
